| Using a patterned backing
fabric, which incorporates the top thread colour, ensures that a cohesive
quilt is achieved. This is particularly useful when several colours
of thread are used on the top of the quilt. When joining the backing,
all selvages should be removed on the seam. It is advisable to use
a slight zig-zag stitch (ie normal stitch length with width increased
to no more than 1/16"). This allows the seam to "give"
to the same extent as the fabric. There is no need to remove the selvages
on the edge of the backing.
Some cotton wadding shrinks on its first wash - to avoid a wrinkled
effect on the finished, washed quilt, we recommend washing the wadding
prior to quilting.
To calculate square yards, measure the quilt in inches, multiply
the length by the width and divide by 1296.
It is advisable to secure all seams on pieced tops and clip all
loose threads.
All seams should be pressed in the same direction - this is particularly
important for seams which are to be stitched in the ditch.
