Do I have to sandwich my
quilt together?
No, my machine allows me to take the top, wadding and backing and
mount them separately.
I have already sandwiched and started quilting a top - can you
finish it? Sorry - I undertake to provide you with a pucker-free
quilt but cannot guarantee this if the quilt has already been sandwiched.
Some customers have said they don't mind an occasional pucker -
but I do! So, I have to ask customers to undo already sandwiched
quilts, if they would like me to quilt them.
Why is it necessary to provide "squared" backing?
I like to provide my customers with a quilt which has parallel sides
and top/bottom. To do this, I take my guidance from the backing.
How do I calculate square yards?
Having measured the top in inches, multiply the length by the width
and divide by 1296.
How big does the backing have to be?
At least 3" all round - for instance, a 70" x 90"
top would require backing measuring 76" x 96".
How would you recommend joining the backing?
Remove the selvages and stitch in the usual way but, instead of
the usual straight stitch, increase the stitch width from 0 to a
very, very slight zig-zag - this will allow the backing seam to
stretch a tiny amount.
Should I remove all the selvages on the backing fabric?
No - I find it very helpful to have a good, firm edge to work to,
so please leave the selvages on the edges of the backing, where
possible.
I haven't finished my quilt yet - can you fit me in when it
is finished?
I will fit you in for the date you require or the next available
slot after that on receipt of a £20 non-refundable deposit.
Do you require a deposit with the quilt?
If you are not booking a slot, I accept your quilt as your deposit
and will require full payment before returning the completed quilt
to you.
How do I get my quilt to you?
If you live locally, you can either deliver it in person,
if you wish - but it would be best to ring (01449 736280) beforehand
to make an appointment. Alternatively, you can post it direct to
Quilting Solutions, Firethorn, Rattlesden Road, Drinkstone, Bury
St Edmunds, Suffolk IP30 9TL. I would suggest that the most economic
way to post is to wrap the top (and wadding and backing if you are
sending them - but check my wadding and backings pages - it may
be just as cheap to buy them from me and save yourself the postage!)
in heavy duty plastic, sealed with heavy-duty parcel tape and send
First Class Recorded (Signed For).
What is the maximum size you can quilt?
The maximum width is 140" and the maximum length is
the length of a piece of string!!! The limiting factor on the length
is the take up roller on the machine and how tightly the finished
quilt is able to be packed and wound around the roller - far more
times with a thin wadding than with a thick one.
